How did the depression hit Germany? World trade sank. US banks which had lent German industries a lot of money then began to demand repayment of loans. Many firms went bankrupt. Government was powerless-no party had more than half of the 608 seats (resulted in coalitions).
In 1932, how many Germans were unemployed? 6 million. Those still in jobs had pay cuts. Many became homeless.
What did Germans think about the crisis? They had already suffered crises like hyperinflation in the 20s. They began to lose faith in democracy and the Weimar government.
What were these economic problems responsible for? Rising popularity of extremist parties. Nazi's appealed to unemployed workers and businessmen (who lost everything in the economic collapse).
Why did the Nazi's increase in popularity during the depression? Nazi's promised prosperity and to make Germany great again which appealed to to many of the unemployed, aswell as businessmen and the unemployed. Some people supportd the anti-communist and anti-jewish veiws. By 1930, Nazi membership grew to over 300,000.
Who was appointed head of propaganda and how did he spread Nazi ideas? Josef Goebbels. He used posters, newspapers and pamphlets.
Who were the Nazi's private army and what did they do? The SA (Brownshirts). Threatened political opponents and encouraged an atmosphere of chaos. Meetings of other parties were disrupted, members beaten up and fires started. They blamed violence on the communists.
