Question Answer
What Landorms result from River Processes? (see River Processes, WJEC)
V-shaped river valleys In the mountains, the river cuts into the land as it flows down steep slopes, the vertical erosion and weathered material movement t the sides of the rivers creates the V-Shaped valley.
Waterfalls a waterfall is made when Hardrock lies over soft rock. The hard rock is harder to erode and creates steep slopes and rapids, eventually a drop develops where the water falls.
Meanders a meander is the curve in a river, erosion in the outside of the meander bend where the water is deeper and the river flows faster, and deposition on the inside of the bend results in the channel migrating.
Oxbow Lakes as the meander continues to erode sideways the loop of the bend becomes tighter, if It becomes to tight the river will cut across the neck of the meander to form a straight river channel. the loop is cut off from the main channel and forms an oxbow lake.
Floodplains As the river gets closer to the mouth it has a large discharge and the river channel is deep and wide. The valley is also wide with an extensive floodplain. each time the river floods. slit is deposited on the flood plain. this makes fertile soils, natural levees are raised banks of deposited material
Deltas a delta is found at the mouth of a river, when a river enters the sea it loses energy ad can no longer carry as much material, it is then deposited. if this happens at a faster rate than the sea can remove the material the delta may form. it provides rich farmland but often floods.
