what is meant with culture? all the values, norms and other acquired characteristics that the member of a group or society share in common.
Name the 3 functions of culture 1. culture defines your identity 2. you share common frame of references 3. culture regulates behaviour
what is frame of reference? same norms, values and customs
Why does culture regulate behaviour? it helps people to behave in an orderly way.
what is meant with presentation of self? The way we show ourselves in a role.
Impression management These groups form teams, who together give a performance. (Restaurant staff for the guests)
Dominant culture the body of values, norms and characteristics that are accepted by people within a society.
Who are the people to decide the dominant culture? people with lots of political and economical influence.
Why is culture important? (notes) 1. Makes you who you are 2. Tells you what kind of behaviour is accepted/expected in a group. 3. Knowing about culture, gives you the ability with others whom you share that culture -> Common frame reference
How does the transfer of culture take place? Family, work, school, sport, etc.
Why is culture not monolitic? it changes and has sub cultures
What is meant with: Dominant culture? The culture accepted by everyone in ethnic society. Mostly determined by political/economical elite.
What is meant with sub-cultures? Smaller groups within the society (mostly) upholding the values and norms of the dominant culture BUT with their own habits, values, etc. that differ from the dom. culture.
What is an ethnical sub-culture? being a member of a group of people or originating from a certain country.
What is a counter-culture? group of people who oppose the DC and do not want to take part of it and form a threat to it and do not want to join the DC.
socialisation the process by which someone, consciously is thought the values, norms and other cultural features of his group.
what are socialising institutions? institutions and organizations within which and through which the transfer of culture takes place in a society. (Kerstmist, carnaval, etc.)
Enculturation When you learn the cultural characteristics of your group on your mother's knee.
Acculturation Learning the characteristics of a culture you were not originally member of.
Internalisation Certain aspects of the culture or community you belong to become so much a part of you that you automatically behave in the way that is expected of you.
Group identification People feel they belong to both the dominant culture and the culture of a smaller group.
