Question Answer
In a kite diagram, what is measured? In a kite diagram, zonation is measured.
When techniques such as the capture and recapture method are used, what is assumed? -there are no deaths, immigration or emigration -identical sampling methods are used each time so comparisons can be made -marking animals does not affect their survival by damaging their bodies or affecting their camouflage
Why are population sizes always changing? -animals are being born and others are dying -there is movement of animals in and out of an ecosystem
What formula is used to estimate a population size? population size= number in 1st sample x 2nd sample/ number in 2nd sample previously marked
What do scientists use the 'capture and recapture' method for? Estimating the population of a species.
What is the name of the method which scientists use to estimate the population of a species? The 'capture and recapture' method.
What are plants and animals dependent on each other for? Supplies of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
What are all ecosystems dependent on? All ecosystems are self supporting, apart from an energy source which is usually the Sun.
What do animals depend on plants for? All animals directly or indirectly depend on plants for food.
What do plants depend on animals for? Pollination and seed dispersal.
What is a community? A community is lots of different species living together in the same ecosystem.
What is an artificial ecosystem? Artificial ecosystems have been made by humans, often using plants and animals from other countries. They will have a very small biodiversity.
What are three examples of a natural ecosystem? Native woodland, lakes and oceans.
What does a natural ecosystem contain? Natural ecosystems contain plants that have grown there naturally and not been introduced by humans.
What is a habitat? A habitat is where an organism lives.
What is an ecosystem? An ecosystem is made up of several habitats. It is all living things and their surroundings in an area.
Living organisms are found where conditions are best for them. What affects their distribution? Their distribution is affected by: -the presence of other living organisms such as predators or herbivores, which eat them -physical factors such as soil type and water availability.
What is biodiversity? Biodiversity is the range of different living organisms in a habitat.
What is a population? A population is a group of animals or plants of the same species.
