What is an alliance? An alliance is an agreement between nations to support and protect each other.
What was the triple entente and which countries were in it? In 1907, a new alliance between France, Britain and Russia was signed creating the Triple Entente.
What is the Triple alliance? An alliance between Germany,Austria- Hungary and Italy formed in 1882.
What was a major consequence of the Alliance system? A major consequence of the alliance system was an increasing demand for more money to be spent on armaments.
Why did the nations become distrustful of each other? The nations of Europe became increasingly distrustful of each other in the early years of the 20th century.
What two incidents happened in 1911 and 1905? in 1905 and 1911, there were two incidents involving Germany and France over Morocco.
What happened on both occasions? On both occasions Germany was forced to back down by Britain.
What was Russia concerned about? In Europe, Russia was concerned about Austria Hungary's intentions in the Balkans.
How long did the Turks have control over the Balkans? This area had been under control of the Ottoman Turks for over 400 years.
What happened as the Ottoman Empire began to unravel? As the Ottoman Empire began to unravel, Austria-Hungary annexed the Balkan states of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
What did the wars in the Balkans lead to? This led to a conference in London attended by the great European powers, with the aim of preventing more war.
Who was Archduke Franz Ferdinand? Archduke Franz Ferdinand was heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary.
What happened to him? On 28 June 1914, the Archduke and his wife made a visit to the hospital to visit those who were injured. He was attacked by Gavrilo Princip a member of a Serbian organisation known as the Black Hand.
How did the assassination of Archduke impact the society? After the assassination, the Austrian government demanded a greater role in Serbian affairs. Germany backed its neighbour Austria in its stance against Serbia, and Russia backed Serbia. The alliances between the various countries invoked and the world moved to world war within six weeks.
