Question Answer
Describe the layers of the Earth. The Earth has four layers: The crust, the mantle, the inner core, the outer core.
What are "plate tectonics"? Plate tectonics is a theory, suggesting that there are plates of lithosphere that slide past, move into, and move away from, each other.
Give three evidences that prove the theory. 1) Similar fossils have been found on different continents, suggesting that these plates were once close together. 2) Similar patterns of rocks on different continents shows that they were joined/ close together 3) the continents fit together like a jigsaw.
Why do the plates move? The plates move because of the convection currents in the MANTLE. Hot rock rises, heated by the Earth's core. The rock spreads in two directions, cools, and sinks. Through this process of heating and cooling, the Earth's plates move apart.
What is convection current? The convection current is the rising of hot substance and the sinking of cooler substances.
Wherever you find plate boundaries, you will find ___________ and _________. 1 - Earthquakes 2 - volcanoes.
What is the a) inner b) outer core made of? The core is made of metal, iron, and mixed nickel. The inner core is solid and the outer is liquid.
