Question | Answer |
The 5 Sense Organs and Their Receptors | Eyes- colour and intensity of light Ears- sound and balance Nose- Smell/chemicals Tongue- chemicals Skin- touch, pressure, pain temperature |
Sensory Neurones | The nerve cells that carry signals as electrical impulses from the receptors in the sense organs to the central nervous system |
Relay Neurones | The nerve cells that carry signals as electrical impulses from the receptors in the sensory neurones to the motor neurones |
Motor Neurones | The nerve cells that carry signals from the central nervous system/relay neurones to the effector |
Effector | The muscles or glands that react to the impulse- muscles contract in response to a nervous impulse, glands secrete hormones |
Synapses | The connection between two neurones is called a synapse- the nerve signal is transferred by chemicals which diffuse across the gap. These chemicals then set off a new electrical signal in the next neurone. |
Reflexes | Reflexes are automatic responses to certain stimuli that reduce the risk of being injured. They are quicker than normal responses because they don't require any thinking |
