Xylem and Phloem
  1. Phloem
    1. Made of columns of elongated living cells with small pores in the end walls - allows cell sap to flow through
      1. Cell sap is a liquid made up of substances being transported + water
      2. Carries food - dissolved sugars
        1. For immediate use or storage
        2. Transport goes in both directions
          1. Translocation - movement of materials from leaves to other tissues throughout the plant.
          2. Xylem
            1. Carries water and mineral ions from roots to the stem and leaves
              1. Made from dead cells joined end to end with no walls between them and a hole down the middle
                1. Strengthened by lignin
                  1. Transpiration stream - movement of water from roots, through xylem and out of the leaves
