Phloem
Made of columns of elongated living cells with small pores in the end walls - allows cell sap to flow through
Cell sap is a liquid made up of substances being transported + water
Carries food - dissolved sugars
For immediate use or storage
Transport goes in both directions
Translocation - movement of materials from leaves to other tissues throughout the plant.
Xylem
Carries water and mineral ions from roots to the stem and leaves
Made from dead cells joined end to end with no walls between them and a hole down the middle
Strengthened by lignin
Transpiration stream - movement of water from roots, through xylem and out of the leaves
