Resource summary
Network Topology
Bus
Disadvantages
If there are many nodes, Network slows down
Data collisions can happen
Low security
Limited cable lenght
If there is a problem in main cable the entire network fails
Advantages
Easy to install
Easy to add extra nodes
Uses less cable than star networks
Best choice for temporary networks
Ring
Disadvantages
If a one device is turned off the network fails
If a cable breaks the network stops working
Data goes though EVERY device meaning data is slower than other network layouts
If there is a problem in the network it is hard to identify the cause
Advantages
All data travels in one direction meaning transmission is simple
No data collisions
Devices can be added easily without the network slowing down
Star
Disadvantages
Costs the most money out all of the networks
If the server crashes no-one can use the network
Extra hardware may be needed
Normally need experts to set-up the network
Advantages
Star network is the most reliable
Good security
Little data collisions due to each device has its own cable to the server
