Resource summary
Inspector Goole
The Inspector comes to investigate the suicide of Eva Smith and interrupts the Birlings celebratory dinner.
With the help of the photograph he brings he shows how each of the Birlings and Gerald played a part in Eva's death.
He is increasingly in control of events and is completely in charge by Act Three.
He grows impatient with Mr Birling - for example when he snaps at Birling for interrupting.
He is not influenced by Mr Birlings attempts to bully or impress him.
He shows no sympathy for Mrs Birling, even when she realises that she made the situation worse for Eric and lost a grandchild.
He makes a powerful speech about social responsibility.
At the end of the play, the audience is unsure if he is a hoax or something supernatural.
“Need not be a big man but he creates at once an impression of massiveness, solidity and purposefulness.” (stage directions)
“A chain of events”
“it’s better to ask for the Earth than to take it”
“If there’s nothing else we have to share our guilt”
"each of you helped to kill her"
"We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other"
"if men will not learn that lesson, then they will be taught it in fire and blood and anguish."
