Trans boundary water conflict over the Mekong river
China
China owns over half the river's upper basin,
which is one of the poorest areas of China.
This makes this area convinient for a
hydroelectric power station. Damning this
river would prevent countries with access to
the lower areas of the river from using it, as it
will dry up
Myanmar
Myanmar owns many tributaries
coming off of the mekong river , but
none of those below where the plans
for china's dam woulds effect
Laos
One of the world's poorest countries and relies on
the Mekong river for 90 percent of their water for
agriculture
creating the dam would prevent
access to this water, decreasing their
economy dramatically, and could
potentially cause hunger problems
Laos also uses the dam for
hydroelectric power to produce
cheap, renewable energy. Without
access to the river, Laos would have
less energy
Thailand
The Mekong
river covers 36
percent of
Thailand
Vietnam
the river gives vietnam extremely fertile
land which is 50,000km squared. Without
access to the river, this land wouldn't be
fertile and agriculture would no longer be
a source of income for vietnam
agriculture produces income
for 40 percent of Vietnam's
population
Cambodia
Most of Cambodia is covered by the
Mekong river, and relies on
flooding of the river to grow rice
efficiently
using the river for hydroelectric
power would prevent detrimental
deforestation in Cambodia
this could boost Cambodia's
economy dramatically
this would prevent Vietnam's
access to Mekong's resources
Rising right wing
Extremist parties in
Europe are on the rise
causes of tension
Brexit
right wing exremist groups
respond to international
extremist groups by blaming
migration and migrants for
these acts of violence when
they are
impacts
Right wing extremist groups form
more people support these views as
they think it favours them and their
country, when in fact many industries
and areas rely on migrant workers
and migration to function properly
