1896 he classified cavity preparations
1908 - invented the 1st foot drill, used nitrous oxide, "extension is prevention"
BLACKS CLASSIFICATION
Class I - occlusal surfaces of molars and premolars and buccal pits
Class II - approximal surfaces of molars and premolars
Class III - approximal surfaces of incisors and canines
Class IV - Incical edges of incisors and canines
Class V - Cervical margins
DISADVANTAGES
Used before adhesive materials were available
Retentive cavities were cut
Removes more tooth sub than necessary
Does not include root or secondary caries
Cavities are now modified versions of Blacks
BLACKS PRINCIPLES TO CAVITY PREPARARTION
OUTLINE FORM - gain access to caries
RESISTANCE FORM - cavity floor at right angle to withstand occ forces
RETENTION FORM - grooves in cavity walls, undercuts, bonding agents
TREATMENT OF RESIDUAL CARIES - remove soft infected dentine, leave hard stained dentine
CORRECTION OF ENAMEL MARGINS - remove weakened enamel edges, bevel edges
CAVITY DEBRIDEMENT - cavity thouroughly washed and dried to remove debris and bacteria
LINE ANGLE - where 2 lines meet
CAVOSURFACE ANGLE - where cavity wall meets tooth surface
POINT ANGLE - where 3 or more lines meet
STAGES IN CAVITY PREPERATION
Gain access to the caries (outline form)
Remove the caries - ADJ then infected but not affected
