Authentic Assessment

What does it mean to be a performance based assessment?
1. Some methods for completing performance based assessment are: oral reports, presentations, portfolios, written assignments and demonstrations.
2. Performance based task should give the student choices on how they can show their proficiency. For example they may choose to give an oral presentation or create a model to show what they learned about ecosystems.
3. Scoring rubics can be used to assess these performances. It is important that the task are clear and meaningful.
4. This is an assessment that uses students actively performing a task to proof their knowledge or ability in place of a written test such as multiple choice or recall question.
What is Authentic Assessment?
1. Authentic Assessment is an assessment that uses a task performed by students in order for teachers to evlauate knowledge/ability.
2. Authentic Assessment comes in a variety of types and can be used along with Traditional Assessment in order for Teachers to get the best picture of their students needs and strengths.
What are Some Types of Authentic Assessment?
1. Checklist-List of Objectives the Teacher is Observing to See if the Student Can/Cannot Complete
  1. Checklist can be used to track progress for individuals and the whole class. They are good for reporting consistently across multiple students by collecting the same data for each student.This information can be used to help make instructional descisions.
2. Portfolio Assessment-A Way to Assess Student Work as Compilation of the Years Work
  1. Portfolios can include tapes of oral work which include presentations, role playing and oral accounts given by students.
  2. Teacher Descriptions can also be included in portfolios. These include formal test results, rating sheets, and checklist.
  3. Portfolio can include a collection of written samples of student work which can be chosen by both the student and the teacher. The collect can include exercise sheets, completed forms, drawing representing content knowledge, and stories.
3. Initial Assessment- Assessment Taken at the Beginning of the Year in Order to Determine Where the Student is.
  1. These assessments can be used to refer students for Language Profiency Testing and help determine if eligilble for services.
  2. When completing the initial assesment it is important to assess in the child's native language when possible. This shows that their native language is important and it valued.
How is Authentic Assessment Different from Traditional Assessment?
1. Authentic Assessment is used to determine what is taught based off student's need, while when using traditional assessment teacher usually teach for the assessment.
2. Authentic Assessment allows for the students to have a choice of ways that they can show their knowledge instead of using a standard test.
Can authentic assessment be used for content knowledge?
1. Authentic assessment can be used to asses content knowledge. By using authentic assessment teachers can focus on assessing content knowledge and not language skills.
  1. Use Thinking Ability and Challenges Content Knowledge
  2. Students can be given a variety of options to show what they learned so that they can choose one that works with their comfort level/language abilities.
    1. They may choose to do an oral presentation if they are not comfortable writing, or they may choose to draw an image to demonstrate understanding.
