    1. urate crystals precipitate within joint - infl occurs - gout attack, repeated cause tophi formation
      1. CM's - gouty arthritis, tophi, gouty nephropathy, uric acid urinary calculi,
        1. normally at night, wakened w/ pain, redness, swelling, warmth in joint
          1. brought on by alcohol, dieting, trauma, medications, surgical stress, illness
          2. Meds/treatment
            1. colchicine, NSAID's, corticosteroids for acute attacks; probenecid (uricosuric) reduce serum uric acid and dissolve urate crystals; allopurinol if renal insufficiency/kidney stones
