Annotations:

  • Can either be a:
  1. Pure substance

    Annotations:

    • Can be broken down to 2 types of substances: a singular element (element) or multiples elements (compound)
    1. Pure substances are defined as substances that are made of only one type of particle (atom or molecule).
      1. Elements

        Annotations:

        • Can be broken down to a smaller type which has to do with the composition of the particles.
        1. An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by physical or chemical means.
          1. Compounds

            Annotations:

            • Can be broken down to a smaller type which has to do with the composition of the particles.
            1. A compound is a substance formed when two or more elements are chemically bonded together. This compound has different properties than the two elements it was before.
              1. Molecules

                Annotations:

                • Can be broken down to the simplest form which has to do with the actual amount of particles that is connected.
                1. Atoms
                  1. An atom is the smallest component of an element, characterized by a sharing of the chemical properties of the element and a nucleus with neutrons, protons and electrons.
                  2. A molecule is the smallest particle in a chemical element or compound that has the chemical properties of that element or compound. Molecules are made up of atoms that are held together by chemical bonds. These bonds form as a result of the sharing or exchange of electrons among atoms.
              2. Mixture

                Annotations:

                • Cannot be broken down as it does not form a new substance when mixed.
                1. A mixture refers to the physical combination (not chemical) of two or more substances on which the identities are retained.
                2. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space
