1. JAMES-LANGE - behaviour precedes conscious cognition. Diff physiological markers

  1. SCHACTER - SINGER - physiological experience interpreted as emotion through context, expectations and experience
    1. Adrenaline experiment - emotion experienced by those unaware
    2. Stooge experiment - influenced participant emotions
  2. emotions elicited & differentiated based on individual subjective evaluation of external situation
    1. SCHERER - fixed dimensions
      1. quality of event
      2. significance in relation to personal goals
      3. time consuming
        could be parallel activation
ZAJONC'S VIEW
1. Appraisal not needed (James-Lange)
2. Emotion precedes cognition (primacy debate)
  1. affect and cognition separate systems
    1. affect can occur without cognition-usually joint
  2. Drugs can induce emotion
  3. Phobia & prejudice - emotion influencing cognition
3. Mere exposure task - previous exposure results in preference for. Subliminal but causing affect
  1. BUT pref ratings aren't the same as emotional experience
4. Conceded unconscious processing
LAZARUS' VIEW
1. Cognitive appraisal essential to emotion experience
2. Manipulation of emotional response to film - appraisal reduced emotional responses eg GSR
  1. DOESN'T prove cognition before emotion
3. Conceded cognition not essential
BIOLOGICAL PATHWAYS
1. LeDOUX - animal work showed structures play different roles
  1. High road - cortex needed for learning new fear stimuli & extinguishing old ones (LAZARUS)
  2. Low road - no cog processing, quicker reactions (ZAJONC)
