The 5 year plans 1928-38
Why
Europe and the USA were far too modernised. They would "crush" Russia in 10 year if nothing was done
All the minerals were in Siberia and the Urals. Too cold+ uninhabited there
All the money was with a pocketful of rich. Rest were poor
Transport+ communication were poor
Unskilled + poorly educated workers
First plan : 1928-33
Targets
Double coal and oil production.
Triple iron, steel and electricity production
New cities like Magnitogorsk and Sverdlovsk are created in Siberia and the Urals
Second plan: 1933-37
Heavy industry still important
More mining for: lead, tin, zinc..
New railways and canals
New Moscow underground
More agriculture objects production
Third plan: 1938-WW2
Switch to consumer goods
BUT world war 2 cut it short in 1940
