Gang Culture,

abuse, Mental
Illness, getting your

Violent parent.
Violence in TV and films,
Adrenaline rush, Selfishness
and Greed, Peer pressure
and Umemployment
Sense of Achievement, child neglect,
feeling isolated and no money
Excluded from school, poor
housing conditions, lack of
qualifications and boredom
Which is most important and why?
Rules are used to prevent crime and
keep people safe. Breaking rules
depends on the situation. For
example, if your family is starving and
you need to steal food.
SOCIAL: The effects of society/ people, peers, friends on your
views. ENVIRONMENTAL: Living environment around you, area and
living place, where and how you were brought up
PSYCHOLOGICAL: Your emotional/ mental state/ how you feel
Crime against the state:
committing a crime that harms
the government, the economy,
and leaders. Eg, treason,
terrorism, benefit fraud and
tax evasion
Crime against a person: Committing a crime
that harms a person. Eg, assault, child
neglect, murder, rape and use of illegal drugs
Crime against property: Committing a
crime that harms buildings/
properties. Eg, vandalism, burglary,
music piracy and arson (setting fire
to buildings)
A sin is breaking a religious rule or
teaching. Eg murder, Blasphemy
(using a religious word in a bad
way, eg God), theft, greed,
jealousy, sex before marriage,
exposing body parts, adultery,
divorce and eating wrong foods
Punishment
AIMS - reform=to help offender become a better person eg burglary, vindication=show a law is
being taken seriously eg driving twice the legal limit of alcohol, protection=for the safety of society
eg handling stolen goods, reparation=to allow the offender to pay for what they've done/fresh start
eg drunk and disorderly, deterrence=discourage other people and offender from committing similar
crimes eg murder (USA), retribution=offer revenge for those who've suffered eg rape
PRISON: We use prison for protection, to educate and punish the offenders, for counselling
Advantages: protects society from
dangerous and violent criminals, cannot
commit anymore crimes, gives prisoners an
opportunity to reflect on actions, punishes
people by separating from loved ones,
deters others who may be thinking about
committing crimes. Disadvantages:
prisoners can educate each other in
criminal matters, re-offend when released,
families suffer through no fault of their own,
bitterness and to get back at society,
relationships break down.
Problems after leaving: can't
get a job, not enough money,
trouble with insurance,
addiction, no support, prison
record, custody of children
and relationships over.
ELIZABETH FRY: Visited Newgate prison
and was appalled at how badly prisoners
get treated, so provided prisoners with
basics like food, clothes and schooling.
Prison Reform Trust:
UK charity founded in
1981 and work to get
prisons in better
conditions, reducing
unnecessary prison
sentences and
promoting equality and
human rights in the
justice system.
RELIGIOUS RESPONSES:
Christianity: Laws must be followed
but everyone makes mistakes so
they should be forgiven, obey the
10 commandments, offenders
should be punished but humanly,
Jesus is prepared to forgive others
so he must be a role mode and most
don't agree with the death penalty.
Hindus believe the death penalty is
acceptable and offenders should
be punished.
CAPITAL PUNISHMENT (THE DEATH PENALTY) -
For: cannot kill again, deters criminals, shows
society's is dealing with crime, the old testament
taught 'a death for a death', cheaper than life
imprisonment. Against: a martyr(people could look
up to them), doesn't stop murder, Jesus forgave,
doesn't allow forgiveness, mistakes can be made.
The death penalty protects people, deters people from committing the
crime and offers retribution/revenge for the family of the victim
