     • cobalt compounds give pink or blue colours
     • iron compounds give red or green
   • part of paint pigments and ceramic glazes
   • pipes

     • hard and strong
     • high melting points

     • high boiling points
   • chemical properties
     • less reactive
       • iron reacts with oxygen and water very slowly when it rusts
       • gold doesn't react at all with water and oxygen
     • speed up certain chemical reactions without being used up themselves
