When something

whole unit. Any fraction with a
numerator that is higher than
the denominator.
Mixed number
A number consisting of a
whole number and a
fraction.
They can be
considered as an
improper fraction.
Decimal place
The position of a number to the
right of the decimal place.
Decimal fraction
Any number less
han 1 that is
expressed as a
deciaml.
Add or subtract decimals.
Write the numbers in
a column, with the
decimal points lined
up.
Dividing fractions.
Ignore the decimal points to give whole
numbers. Then divide the numbers: the
result will be the same as if dividing
deciamls.
Multiply decimals
Ignore the decimal points and
multiply the whole numbers.
Then insert the decimal places in
the same as the total number of
decimal places in the number
being multiplied
Rounding decimals
When working with decimals it is often necessary to
approximate the figure by rounding up or down. Do
this exactly the same way as you round integers, but
round the number to the nearest tenth, hundredth,
thousandth and so on, depending on how many
decimal places or significant figures you want the
use.
