Shortage of land and resources + inefficient farming methods
Farmers could barely feed themselves
In addition, the Great Depression led to the policy of Protectionism in many countries
Taxes rose, exportation and importation dropped in Japan
Increased unemployment + further lack of resources
Angry Japanese blamed these problems on the Gov
Japanese Gov was pressured and further convinced for the need for territorial expansion in order to solve the crisis in Japan
Western discrimination against Japan
Japan was seen as an inferior Asian power by the European nations despite Japan's power
During Ruuso-Japanese war, USSR refused to compromise with japan through negotiations, Japan was allowed to have lower military strength than some western powers during Washington Naval Conference and there was American discrimation against Japanese
This angered the Japanese and further convinced them of the need for territorial expansion to establish themselves in the Asia Pacific, so that they can gain status and be seen equally by the Western powers
Weakness of the LoN
LoN was ineffective in stopping Japan's aggressive action
For example: As Japan invaded Manchuria following the Mukden accident, LoN only condemned Japan and failed to take effective actions against Japan, even when Japan withdrew itself from LoN. Also LoN only gave reluctant help to China as the 2nd Sino-Japanese war fully broke out following the Marco polo inccident where Japanese aggression during the Nanking massacre was made know worldwide
This ineffectiveness of the LoN allowed Japanese ambitions and confidence in its expansionist policy to grow
