    1. When plates collide at destructive margins
      1. Found at destructive plate margins and places where there used to be them
        1. E.g. the west coast of North America
          1. Areas have lots of very high mountains which are rocky with steep slopes. Often snow and glaciers at the peaks and lakes in the valleys between
        2. When tectonic plates collide the sedimentary rocks that have built up between them are folded and forced upwards to form mountains
          1. Continental plate and an oceanic plate collide
            1. E.g. the Andes in South America
            2. Two continental plates collide
              1. E.g. the Himalayas in Asia
          2. Uses
            1. Farming
              1. Higher mountain slopes are used to graze animals e.g. mountain goats
                1. Lower slopes are used to grow crops
                  1. Steep slopes are sometimes terraced to making growing crops easier
                  2. Hydro-electric power
                    1. Steep sided mountains and high lakes (to store water) are ideal for generating HEP
                    2. Forestry
                      1. Good environment to grow trees e.g. conifers on steep valley slopes
                        1. Used for fuel, building materials, paper and furniture
                        2. Mining
                          1. Source of metal ores, zig zag roads are carved on the side for accessibility
                          2. Tourism
                            1. Spectacular scenery
                              1. Winter - sports like skiing, snowboarding and ice climbing
                                1. Summer - walks
                                  1. Tunnels are drilled to make straight fast roads and this improves communication
