Advantages
it punishes people by separating them from their friends and family.
it deters others who may be thinking about committing a crime
it gives prisoners an opportunity to reflect on their actions and reform
prople cannot commit more crimes if they are locked away
the government needs to show it has a tough stance against crime

Disadvantages
offenders families suffer through no fault of their own (e.g. children are deprived of a parent)
most prisoners reoffend when they are released
relationships often break down while a person is in prison
prisoners often educate each other in criminal matters in prison
prisons often breed resentment, bitterness and a determination to 'get back' at society
a prison record makes it harder for offenders to get a job on release, which leads them back to crime
prison is a punishment with the aim of protection. people with be safe from threats, violence and from risk as criminals with be in a guarded place.
if the offender does not have a long sentence they might not have time to reflect and change so continue to commit crimes after release.
