What is it?
A rotating vinyl disc

What's it used for?
Creating audio effects through controlling different elements of playback e.g: speed.
Well known for the art of scratching.
Can be used to beatmatch songs though this changes the pitch too.
Who uses it?
Developed specifically for the DJ market.
Used mostly in hip hop.
Can be used in other genres e.g: Nu-metal
What types are there?
2 main types
Belt driven turntable
Direct drive turntable
Preferred.
No danger of belt attached to the motor breaking.
No belt is used to connect the motor to the platter.
What are the different parts?
Platter - the part the record sits on and spins
Tone arm - holds the needle
Motor - part which supplies power to the turntable
Pitch control - allows you to vary the pitch from 5-10%
Speed calibration strobe - helps the DJ to see when the record is playing at the correct speed
