CAPTURING THE AUDIENCE: Shakespeare provides all background
information needed to help understand the play. In the brawl, he
portrays all layers of Veronese society, from those lowest in power
(servants), to the prince who occupies the political and social pinnacle.
He further provides excellent characterisation of Benvolio as
thoughtful and fearful of the law, Tybalt as a hot-head, and Romeo as
distracted a lovelorn, while showing the deep and long standing
hatred between the Capulets and Montagues. At the same time,
Shakespeare shows some major themes of the play.
