                                                                                                                    1. Narrow vertical area behind the groove for the left subclavian artery.

                                                                                                                      1. forms a groove in front of the descending aorta.

                                                                                                                      1. Tongue-like projection of the upper lobe at the cardiac notch
                                                                                                                        1. Corresponds to the right middle lobe
                                                                                                                          1. The cardiac notch is produced on the upper lobe of the left lung owing to the bulging of the heart.
                                                                                                                          2. Fissures of the lungs
                                                                                                                            1. The left lung: Has only 1 fissure (oblique) dividing it into upper & lower lobes.
                                                                                                                              1. The right lung: Has 2 fissures (oblique and horizontal) into 3 lobes (upper, middle & lower).
                                                                                                                                1. Oblique fissure
                                                                                                                                  1. Begins at the posterior border:
                                                                                                                                    1. opposite the 3rd thoracic spine
                                                                                                                                    2. Extends downwards and forwards
                                                                                                                                      1. Cuts the inferior border of the lung opposite the 6th costo-chondral junction
                                                                                                                                        1. Follows the medial border of the scapula when the arm is abducted
                                                                                                                                        2. Horizontal fissure
                                                                                                                                          1. Extends from the anterior border of the right lung at the level of the 4th costal cartilage
                                                                                                                                            1. Ends at the oblique fissure in the midaxillary line
                                                                                                                                              1. On the surface of the body, it passes forwards from the oblique fissure following the line of the 4th rib.
