It is an acronym formed from the
initial letters of the groups previous
name in Arabic "al-dawba-al-islamiya
fil Iraq wa al-sham" It doesn't mean
anything sounds similar to an Arabic
verb that means to tread underfoot,
trample down or crush something.
They don't like being called that.
Used in the middle
East and further afield.
For example France,
David Cameron and UK
parliament.

Social Motives.
Their strategy of
using Social Media
has inspired
thousands of men
from all over the
world to fight with
them.
They use Twitter,
Facebook ,etc... to
recruit thousands of
new fighters and
preenting war like a
computer game.
Daesh create propaganda
film which glorify the war
they are waging. This
attracts young Muslims
across the Middle East.
Isis rule territory they have
captured with fear: anyone
speaking against then even
Sunni Muslims are killed.
Theses executions are often
filmed and put on social
media sites, making others
scared of fighting against
them.
Cultural Motives
ISIS has started its own
schools, and has begun
recruiting young boys to
indoctrinate them and get new
fighters. In this sense they are
creating their own culture.
Isis are creating a whole new culture
which aims to have a religious leader as
head of state. This idea of a
God-centred culture is appealing to
many Muslims who fell disillusioned
with materialist, western ideas of
culture.
Religious Motives
ISIS fighters believe they
are fighting in a Jihadi holy
struggle against evil which
Allah approves of. If they die
they believe they will go to
paradise.
Belief is strong amongst many ISIS
frighten that they are doing the will
of Allah (God) by creating an Islamic
Caliphate. Videos of Islamic online, of
which there are huge numbers often
have members saying 'Allah hu Akbar'
meaning 'God is Great';.This Idea of a
God centered society appeals to some
Muslims who disgrace with Western
materialist values.
Historical Motives
3 years of Civil war in
Syria and the removal
of Sadam Hussein, has
left a power vacuum
in the region that ISIS
is filling.
Iraqs current
borders were
created by English
and French
colonisers after
World War 1. Some
Muslims want to
re-draw the map
for themselves and
create their own
identity not one
created by foreign
powers.
ISIS in the news
A top ISIS commander in Afghanistan has called the
president-elect Donald Trump a 'complete-maniac' and
said his 'utter hate towards Muslims
Trump declined to tell how he planned to defeat ISIS,
saying he wanted to preserve the element of
surprise and that 'we have some great generals. He
had previously said he knows more than those very
generals. "I'll be honest with you, I probably will do
better because look at the job they have done.
Irish ISIS fighter
kills himself in
Iraq suicide
bombing. Khalid
Kelly reported to
have blown
himself up in a
vehicle attack
near the Islamic
State stronghold
of Mosul.
Women are treated poorly under ISIS. They
are forced to cover their whole bodies only
showing their eyes. They have to be
accompanied by a chaperone at all times
when in public. When travelling they are not
allowed to be alone. If found wearing high
heels the women secret police would punish
them. Women on packing of products whose
faces aren't covered are covered or scribbled
in.
Life Under ISIS
Foreign ISIS fighters are treated highly and
with some respect. The rich people from
towns before ISIS took over them were
kicked out and luxurious houses and were
given to the foreign ISIS fighters.
