Conformity to a majority
influence Asch: Ø Lab
experiment Ø Assigned
more confederates than
participants. Ø Gave
everybody three lines and
a separate line and were
all asked which line is
most similar to the
separate line. Ø
Confederates were asked
to deliberately recall the
wrong answer. Ø Will
participants conform? Ø
Around 1/3 conformed,
less conformed when the
task was more difficult and
when the confederates
were inconsistent.
Conformity to a
minority influence
study - MOSOVICI
Moscovici: Ø Lab experiment Ø More participants were assigned than
confederates. Ø Everybody was shown 36 blue slides, each with a
different shade of blue. Ø Confederates deliberates said they were green.
Ø Will participants conform? Ø Around 8% conformed which showed that
people conform to an extent but the rate is not very high. Ø When the
participants were able to write down their answer privately, conformity
increased. Ø When the confederates were consistent and the task was
made more difficult – conformity increased.
