Q5: How did you attract/address your audience?
  1. Sound/Music:
    1. We have included a lot of tense building music and sound effects with the aim of hooking and engaging our target audience. A constant soundtrack is used to build suspense and tension in the background of the opening. This will attract the audience demographic because it is a hint to us that the equilibrium will be interupted hence causing action and drama. We also used a variety of different short sounds throughout the opening to make sure it was not repetitive or boring but still show the danger the protagonist is facing. This makes the opening exciting and implies that there is an action element of the film.
    2. Editing
      1. Because our young target audience will not be interested by a boring opening sequence and probably wouldny continue watching the film, we had to develop our editing skills to turn an average video into an eye catching one. Firstly, our opening was very fast paced helped by lots of match on action shots. This helped engage the audience because it informed them that this was building up to some kind of dramatic event, which it was. We also used a black screen to great effect i our opening on two occasions. The first time we used this was when our protagonist was falling over but it was displayed as a point of view and as if he had collapsed, immersing the audience and maybe leaving some questions as to why this has happened. At the end of the sequence, another black screen is used after a long close up of the protagonist. This will attract our demographic because the sequence suddenly ends which adds tension and it provides the audience with a reason to watch the rest of the film.
      2. Camera:
        1. A variation of camera angles helped us attract our target audience. An example of one abstract camera angle that we used was a point of view shot which helped the audience identify with the protagonist as it was if they were experiencing what he was going through. Our variety of possible secondary audiences could possibly use this shot as a chance to escape because they are seeing what a young teenager is seeing. We included many other abstract shots like this to get the attention of the audience as a sequence with similar shots would have been boring. The filming of our sequence was done on a Cannon 700D camera which made the production more high definition than a normal camera would have looked. This is attractive for the audience because seeing this opening will make them think that it is a professional production.
        2. Clothing:
          1. Choosing the right clothing and image for our protagonist wasn't just key for the attraction of our audience but was also a good way to address them. We did not use much clothing in our opening due to the fact that we only had one character, this meant that our one protagonist had to be presented right as he was the focus of the camera at all times. We bought a NHS gown as it not only provided a sense of realism for the audience, but also deveoped into an enigma code, as at this stage the audience are unaware of how the character got to where he is. This engages them to watch on and find out the reasons behind his illness.
          2. Location:
            1. The location of the opening was our most engaging element of the sequence for our audience because it provided us with some action codes and left questions to be answered that the audience would hopefully watch on to find the answer to. Our opening is set in an isolated forest which could make the audience start to feel uneasy but will also engage them because it suggests that there will be a disruption to the equilibrium.
            2. Protagonist:
              1. We made sure that the way that our actor acted suited the mood of the opening, helping engage the audience. This is because this was one of the most vital parts to attract the audience because he is of a similar age to them. A male audience will be able to build a stroonger bond with the protagonist later on in the film where some of his hobbies and interests will be revealed. Our protagonist will also be going through what our primary audience will e going through, meaning that they would watch the film to be educated and to identify with him. To further attract the attention of the audience, we have only included this character in our opening, although there will be many others. This clarifies to them that the film will be based around this character and is also quite unconventional which is engaging. The very cautious and nervy actions from our actor also give a clear image that he is mentally unstable along with many other elements in the opening.
              2. Institution:
                1. Because our audience will be predominantly from the UK, the Independent and UK based companies that we have chose to produce our film will help attract our audience. This is becuase Film4 are well established in producing similar films to ours so we thought that people may be encouraged to watch it because of this. Our audience will also recognise these companies.
                2. Font:
                  1. We made sure that our font had youthful connotations which teenagers from the age of 13-21 would be attracted by. Therefore, we chose a typewriter font as we thought that this would portray the fact that our film was coming of age. It was important we clarified the genre with the typography because the other elements in our opening didn't instantly make you think of this genre. The typography that we used for the title was developed as it was slightly distorted. This was done with the intention of engaging our audience because it could signify a disruption to an equilibrium. Hence, this will be engaging to the majority of our audience that want to watch the film to be entertained. Another way that our typography attracted our audience was by our use of keynote. This software allowed us to position the text wherever we wanted on the screen which meant that they didnt appear in the same place every time, keeping the audience on their toes.
                  2. Voice over:
                    1. Our voiceovers were used to great effect when engaging the audience as well as developing the narrative. We included voice overs after watching The Breakfast Club where their voice overs not only develop the narrative but also engage the audience because it was as if the protagonist is speaking to the audience. The first voice over that we included in our sequence was a police radio call which informed the audience that there was a potential danger or that the equilibrium will be disrupted. The audience would therefore watch this film to escape from everyday woes and also to be entertained. We also used a phone call from the protagonists mother. The voice mail tone will provide the young audience with some realism and the mothers voice sounds distressed to attract the attention of the audience. This will be relevant to our primary audiences lives as their mums will be a huge influence.
