increase of IOP (>20mmHG) by excessive accumilation of aqueous humor
normal IOP: 10-20mmHG
Two types of Glaucoma
Acute (close/narrow angle)
acute/ SUDDEN marked increase in IOP
etiology: aging, trauma, infection, drugs
- Patient will feel heaviness in eyes -eye pain, N/V, headache
Chronic (open angle)
insidious (gradual) onset
etiology: aging in peoples >50 years
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
early signs:
increase IOP, blurred vision
late signs:
- peripheral vision loss - appearance of halos
2nd leading cause of blindness
Diagnostic Tests
Tonometer: to measure IOP
RISK FACTORS:
family history of glaucoma, family history of diabetes, previous vision problems, medication use
