Para 1 - Duror and inner flaw of hatred for imperfections (ironic) - mention of Peggy and intro of Calum Para 2 - Macrocosm of war and sympathising w/ Hitler & blaming Calum for descent into madness Para 3 - Deer drive - Calum's mistake and Duror's madness becoming apparent Para 4 - Neil's refusal to help Roderick and Duror's tipping point - Murder of Calum and Suicide Conclusion 2) Choose a novel that deals with family life.show how the relationships within the family affect the events and outcome of the story. Para 1 - LRC - good christian values but Husband's aristocratic views which cause inner conflict Para 2 - Roderick's differing views on class system compared to LRC - Beach hut incident Para 3 - Roderick and LRC again in conflict due to deer drive's car journey (the dogs over CG's) Para 4 - Roderick stuck up tree - neil's refusal to help bc of how LRC has treated CGs and LRC's realisation Conclusion 3) Choose a novel in which conflict develops between two of the main characters. Briefly outline the nature of the conflict and how it is resolved. In greater detail, explain how the author makes you feel sympathetic towards one of the characters involved. Intro Para 1 - Good vs Evil - Calum and Duror and the intial reasons for Duror's hatred. Calum unaware of this. Para 2 - Deer Drive conflict bc Calum's Innocence and Duror's growing hatred/madness - sympathetic towards Calum (suffering of the innocent) Para 3 - Pub incident where community respect CG's which Duror can't stand - leads to increase in hatred and further descent into madness (again sympathy for Calum) Para 4 - Final conflict - demise of both Duror and Calum (resolution) and final sympathy towards the innocent (sacrifice) Conclusion 4) Choose a novel in which an innocent character suffers. Explain how and why this suffering occurs and why, in your opinion, the author has deliberately included this in his or her work. Intro Para 1 - Calum becoming Duror's target immediately and LRC looking down on CG's Para 2 - Deer drive - calum forced to witness suffering of an animal and Duror's hatred more apparent Para 3 - The beach hut - Calum accused of taking doll for perverted reason & LRC treating CGs as inferior Para 4 - Brutal murder of Calum in tree due to Duror reaching his tipping point Conclusion 5) Choose a novel in which one of the characters is not in harmony with his/her society.Describe the character's situation and go on to discuss how it adds to your understanding of central concern of the text. Intro Para 1 - Roderick differing in views of class system from family Para 2 - Conflict between LRC and Roderick because of car after deer drive (dogs over CGs) - social divison Para 3 - Roderick can not convince LRC that she is wrong and gets shut down at every chance - seen as the wrong one in the family Para 4 - As a result of LRC's behaviour, Roderick is refused help out of the tree even thought he befriended CGs and treated them as equals Conclusion 6) Choose a novel which has a particular key scene.Briefly outline what the key scene is and go on to show how it is crucial to a full understanding of the novel as a whole. Intro Para 1 - Deer Drive - Duror persuading LRC to force CG's to take part - hopes of humiliating Calum - (Good vs Evil) Para 2 - On the Drive - Calum upset over witnessing the deer dying and flinging himself on it - Duror imagining Peggy whilst slaughtering the beast - (Suffering of the innocent) Para 3 - LRC Mortified of Calum's actions during Deer drive but also concern of Duror's - aware of his madness Para 4 - Foreshadowing of events later to follow - death of Calum who is seen by Duror as a beast - understanding of consequences of evil Conclusion 7) Choose a novel which has a particular turning point.Briefly outline what the turning point is and then go on to show how it is important in the development of the novel, its central concerns and its conclusion. Intro Para 1 - Deer Drive - further insight into Duror's descent into madness and Good vs Evil Para 2 - Calum forced to witness slaughtering of the deer - (Suffering of the Innocent) Para 3 - LRC's and Tulloch's realisation of Duror's madness Para 4 - The escalation of Duror's hate (crucifixion) and foreshadowing of ending.climax Conclusion
