Paul Berry's short puppet animation, 'The Sandman' released in 1992 successfully creates a tense, sinister atmosphere throughout the animation. The original Sandman was known as a mythical creature that would visit sleeping children and sprinkle sand over their eyes granting them good dreams. However this story was twisted by a German author E.T.A Hoffman, He played with the idea of the western folklore and created an evil, sinister version of the Sandman who would come into the bedrooms of restless children and rip their eyes out which he would then take and feed to his 'children' on the moon. Berry created a nightmarish interpretation of Hoffman's version of the story to reveal the cruelty humans are capable and also shows how terrifying our imagination can be.
