Resource summary

Page 1

photosynthesis is a series of enzyme controlled reactions which take place in two separate stages

stage 1 - PHOTOLYSIS

during photolysis light energy from the sun is trapped by chlorophyll and converted into chemical energy some of this energy is used to split the raw material water into hydrogen and oxygen  the oxygen is a by-product which diffuses out of the plant cell some of the energy trapped  by the chlorophyll is used to make a molecule called ATP which stores chemical energy

stage 2 - CARBON FIXATION

in the second stage of photosynthesis, hydrogen from the first stage and carbon dioxide from the first stage is used to make sugar (glucose) carbon fixation is a series of reactions which requires energy  each reaction is controlled by an enzyme the energy needed comes from ATP
