Koko - Yiri :From the album Burkino FasoReleased in 2002It is learnt through Oral TraditionThe texture of the piece: Starts off monophonic with only the balaphone's playing When the second balaphone enters the texture becomes heterophonic It is also polyphonic at times Features of the rhythm include cross rhythms, polyrhythms and syncopationThe piece is modal and uses a pentatonic scale ( 5 notes) being- Gb, Ab, B, Db, Eb The singers follow a solo voice in call and response but unison is also used.Ostinato on the drums, which continues to play a rhythmic ostinati throughout. The metre at the start of the piece is free/un-meteredThe time signature is 4/4When the balaphones play at the beginning the interval between the two is an octave.
