What is algae? -simple plant -have chlorophyll for photosynthesis Plant VS Algae -algae lack of vascular conducting system -algae have a simple reproductive system compared to ordinary plant
Characteristic of algae -photoautotrophic -need water -sexual and asexual -most can be found at moist place (rock)
Cell wall of algae -have diff component. -some made up by chitin -some no cell wall -strengthen by calcium carbonate, coralline algae
Distribution of algae a) planktonic = suspended in aqueous environment b) benthic = at bottom of water c)neustonic = at water atmosphere interface
Algal reproduction asexual – fragmentation (involve thallus) - spores - binary fission sexual reproduction -involve female structure and male structure Female structure – oogonia Male structure – antheridia -à fuse together form zygote
Benefits of algae -provide habitat for marine life -source of food to human and marine life Disadvantages of algae -also cause algal bloom due to excessive of nutrition supply to the algae -cause red tide by dinoflagellates -kill other organisms
Taxonomy-Chlorophyta -rhodophyta -phaeophyta -chrysophyta -phyrrophyta *they can be differentiate from the cell wall, chlorophyll, and the habitat of the algae*
Slime molds -its look like fungi in appearance -also same in life cycle of fungi BUT -different in cellular organization and reproduction Function of molds -decaying wood -engulf bacteria (act as predator) -act as decomposer and consumer in atmosphere -recycling nutrient and also can cause diseases to plant.
