After the death of Prince Henry the Portuguese continued to send ships down the African coasts. Bartholomew Diaz led an expedition of 3 ships down the coast of Africa. He hoped to sail around the tip of Africa and reach Asia.In January 1488 he was caught in a violent storm and lost sight of land for 13 days, when the storm ended he realised he had rounded the tip of Africa. Bartholomew Diaz was the first European to enter the Indian Ocean. He wanted to continue to Asia but shortage of food and water meant he had to turn back. As a result of the bad weather he experienced, Diaz called the tip of Africa the Cape of Storms. The king of Portugal wanted more sailors to round the tip of Africa so he renamed it the Cape of Good Hope.
