India's Caste System:The development gap can create differences not just between the rich and poor but also between groups of people in the same country. The caste system is a religious and social class system where classes are defined by birth and family. Dalits - lowest status - known as untouchables - work in unhealthy, unpleasant or polluting jobs, suffering from social prejudice, segregation and extreme poverty. Not allowed to worship in the same temple as others and must obtain water from other sources.
