What was the Background of the Docklands? between 1700 and 1900 it was one of the busiest ports in the world employing 27000 people. By 1970’S it was in decline and the docks were closing one by one
What were reasons for its decline? Docks were unable to accommodate modern supertankers Needed more room around docks for containers Alternative forms of transport
Problems the decline caused Massive unemployment –directly and indirectly (negative multiplier effect) Social problems and esteem of the area
What were solutions to the problems? London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) est in 1981 was responsible for the development of the area and bringing it back to life. Created an Enterprise Zone and new developments included the DLR, Canary Wharf, London Arena and housing.
What were the economic effects? Improved transport- DLR and extension to the Jubilee Line – access for thousands of passengers New roads including a link with M11 Number of business doubled from1000 to 2400 and most business space in Canary Wharf is now let Employment increased 30000 to 70000
What were the Social Effects? 22000 new homes many converted into luxury flats 10000 local authority homes refurbished New shopping complex and marinas, parks and an indoor arena Over £100 million spent on health, education New campus for university of East London
What were the Environmental Effects? Open space created 200000 trees planted Derelict land reclaimed Conservation areas set up
What Conflict was created? Locals can not afford new housing and there is still a shortage of low cost housing Jobs in the new hi-tech industry are not suitable for Dockers The yuppie newcomers have been blamed for breaking up the old close knit community in the east end Not enough services e.g. school and hospitals and not enough old age care for the elderly Very expensive and not worth the money
