What is respiration? Respiration is the process of chemical changes to deliver energy for the cells in the body where it is needed.
What is inhaling? Taking in air through the mouth or nasal cavity.
Where does respiration start? In the mouth or nasal cavity as they are the first parts of the respiratory system.
Define exhaling. Breathing out waste carbon dioxide and other gases in the air such as water vapour.
What is the oesophagus? The food pipe that takes food to the stomach.
What happens in the nasal cavity? The cilia capture any dust particles or bacteria inhaled with the air.
Where do you exhale and inhale oxygen and carbon dioxide? Mouth and nasal cavity.
What is the epiglottis? The flap of skin that closes the windpipe when you swallow.
What is the sheet of muscle that controls your breathing? The diaphram.
What are alveoli? Small sacs of air where the gas exchange in the lungs happens.
How many of alveoli are inside your lungs? About 600 million.
What is the Trachea also known as? Windpipe
List in order the parts of the respiratory system that air passes through as it is breathed in? Nasal Cavity Mouth, Trachea, Lungs, Bronchi, Bronchioles, Alveoli
What is Cilia? It is Small Hairs in the Nasal Cavity that collect Particles, Dust and Bacteria from air.
Explain why Lungs work far better with Alveoli than they would without them? As Alveoli are responsible for gas exchange in Lungs.
What are Bronchi? They are the largest branches stemming from the Trachea inside the Lungs.
