What are hormones? Hormones are chemical substances that act as messengers in the body.
What is the endocrine system? It is a communication system that controls the internal environment of the body.
What is a pituitary gland? The endocrine gland that controls the activites of other endocrine glands; it is often called the 'master gland'.
What are target cells? The cells on which hormones act.
What is hypothalamus? A portion of the brain that constantly checks the internal environment of the body.
What is homeostatis? The process of maintaining a constant internal environment.
What is feedback system? Body systems regulate themselves by monitoring and self correction adjusting output depending on stimulus.
What is an effector? Muscles or glands that put the messages into effect.
What is a receptor? A specialised cell that detects stimuli.
What is endothermic? Able to maintain a constant body temperature.
What is ectothermic? Animals that rely on environmental temperature to regulate body temperature and have the body temperature similar to their surroundings.
What is the function of hypothalamus? The most important function is to link the nervous system and the endocrine system.
What is another name for Pituitary gland? 'Master gland'
What are hormones responsible for? Water balance, body temperature and the volume of glucose in your blood.
What is a thyroid? Hormone thyroxin which controls the rate of chemical reactions in the cell.
What is pancreas? It produces the hormones insulins and gluocagon which both control blood glucose levels.
What is Adrenal? Produces the hormones adrenalin in readiness for flight/fight.
What happens if the temperatur of your body goes a few degrees above? Your metabolism will stop and you will die.
What happens if the temperatur of your body goes a few degrees lower? Your metabolism will slow down.
What does the hypothalamus act on? Pituitary gland
