Imitation 2.play- in which children take the roles of "significant others" (mommy daddy 3.Games- roles of several other people at the same time example group sports 4. Important -Generalized other- widespread cultural norms and values we use as references in evaluation ourselves
Erik Erickson-stages of development Viewed development as occurring throughout life as we face different challenges in different sages of life
Agents of socialization 1. Family- is (arguably) every society's most important agent of socialization 2. Schooling- introduces students to being evaluation according to universal standards 3. Peer groups- have interests, social position and ages in common- important during adolescence
Anticipatory socialization The process of social learning directed toward gaining a desired position commonly occurs among peers
Re-socialization Radically altering an inmates personality through deliberate control of the environment Two stage process: 1. The staff attempts to erode the new inmates established identity 2. Then a new self is rebuilt through a system of rewards and punishments
