1. SAFETY AND SECURITY | "essential desire to feel protected and safe from threat" example: house modifications (alarms) |
2. HEALTH | "holistic concept relating to a person's perception of wellbeing" example: balance of physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual |
3. EDUCATION | "acquiring knowledge and skills" example: schools, TAFE, community college higher education --> likely to access high level of economic resources --> wellbeing |
4. SENSE OF IDENTITY | "an individual idea of who they are" example: young person may see themselves as a good student, with a part-time job and the ability to go to UNI --> contribute to a positive sense of identity. |
5. EMPLOYMENT | "an activity to which one devotes time; exerting energy towards a goal for payment, profit or commision. example: for young adults, work can enhance the structures and routines established at school open new opportunities. |
6. ADEQUATE STANDARD OF LIVING | "primary needs - food, clothing and shelter - that are required by all" example: organisations such as Salvation Army help assist people meet these needs. |
MASLOWS HIERARCHY critique and debate relevance | In today's context, this model is not fitted for all individuals, as there are many people who are highly satisfied with the basic needs. |
SATISFACTION OF NEEDS AND WANTS goal setting | "objectives that we aim for in life" eg. a student is aiming for the top marks in all subjects. He then sets goals for each week to have past papers completed and 100%. |
SATISFACTION OF NEEDS AND WANTS enhancing wellbeing | When indivduals and families make progress on achieving goals, there is a reward and sense of satisfaction. |

HOW DO HUMAN RESOURCES ASSIST IN SATISFYING SPECIFIC NEEDS? | eg. to assist in satisfying the specfic need of employment. Initiative to seek an occupation and knowledge on a wide range of jobs is essential. |
SPECIFIC RESOURCES non-human | "tangible or touchable things" - food - clothing - money - electricity |
HOW DO NON-HUMAN RESOURCES ASSIST IN SATISFYING SPECIFIC NEEDS? | e.g To assist in satisfying the specfic need of health, non-human resources such as food, clothing and money will greatly assist as they will ensure the physical wellbeing is good and that you are able to afford medication, services etc. |
INTERCHANGEABILITY OF RESOURCES | "resources have a variety of uses and individuals must decide how to best use them" eg. a teacher earns a salary and may use some MONEY to hire a cleaner. In this way, one person's money buys someone else's TIME and SKILLS. The cleaner could use her pay to meet ADEQUATE STANDARD OF LIVING or EMOTIONAL wellbeing (family vacatation) |
RESOURCE SUSTAINABILITY (to conserve a resource) | Effective resource management relies on people and governments to make carefully considered decisions on how to conserve a resource for long use. eg. recycling paper or ink cartidges and sending electronic files instead of printing |
