What is Covalent bonding? Covalent bonding is the sharing of electrons between 2 non-metals
List the properties of small covalent molecules? - low melting + boiling points - usually liquids/ gas at room temp - weak forces of attraction - do not conduct electricity because molecules have no overall electrical charge
What is Ionic bonding? Ionic bonding is when atoms lose/ gain electron to have a full outershell. Metal atoms lose electron to become positively charged ions. Non-metal atoms gain electons to become negatively charged ions
What is Metallic bonding? The strong electrostatic forces of attraction between metal ions and a sea of delocalised electrons.
list the properties of large covalent molecules? - always solid at room temperature - high melting + boiling points
What are the properties of a solid. - have a fixed shape (cannot be compressed) - strong forces of attraction between particles - particles very close together - vibrate around a fixed point (small amount of kinetic energy)
describe the structure and properties of a diamond - giant rigid covalent structure (lattice) - each carbon atom covalently bonded to 4 other carbon atoms - very high melting and boiling point - cannot conduct electricity as no free electrons to carry charge
What are the properties of a liquid. - hard to compress - take the shape of their container - particles are close together but not as close as solids so forces of attraction are not as strong - have a random shape - vibrate but have more kinetic energy than solids
What are the properties of gases? - easy to compress - take the shape of their container - have a random arrangement - particles very far apart (no forces of attraction) - move quickly in all directions
What is this an example of? How do you know? ionic bond as it involves gaining/losing electrons from the elements

give the structure and properties of silicon dioxide (silica) - oxygen and silicon covalent bond together - each oxygen is joined to 2 silicon atoms - each silicon is joined to four oxygen atoms - high melting and boiling point
what is this an example of? How do you know? covalent bond as it involves sharing of electrons
give the structure and properties of graphite. - a form of carbon - high melting and boiling point - 1 carbon atoms covalently bonded to 3 carbon atoms layered hexagonal structure - no covalent bonds between layers + held together by weak intermolecular forces so are slide past each other - slippery and soft so good as lubricant - can conduct electricity
