What job does the digestive system have? Makes food available in a form the body can use.
What is digestion? Process of breaking down food into a useable form and making its nutrients available.
What are the 2 different types of digestion? - Mechanical - Chemical
What is mechanical digestion? The breaking down of food by being crushed, sliced and torn into smaller pieces; its a physical change because no new substances are made.
What is chemical digestion? Substances in the food the is broken down into simpler chemicals by saliva in your mouth and gastric juice in your stomach.
What are 2 forms of mechanical digestion? - Biting - Chewing
What are the 4 types of teeth? - Incisors - Canines - Premolars - Molars
What is the job of the incisors? To bite off pieces small enough to chew.
What are the functions of the canine teeth? They have no functions.
What is your oesophagus? A long muscular tube that starts at your mouth and ends at the stomach.
What is peristalsis? The process of pushing food through the digestive tract by alternating contraction and relaxation of muscles.
What is epiglottis? The flap of skin in the oesophagus that stops food entering the windpipe.
What is sphincters? The circle of a muscle.
What is Gastric juice? A mixture of chemicals produced by cells in the stomach wall.
What does Gastric juice contain? - Hydrochloric acid - Mucus - Digestive juices
What is the small intestine? The longest part of the digestive tract.
How long can the small intestine be up to? Up to 6m long.
What is the diameter of the small intestine? 3cm
What is duodenum? The first part of the small intestine.
What is pancreas? An organ associated with the digestive system that produces chemicals to help the digestion of carbohydrates, fats and proteins.
What is the Liver? The largest internal organ; it provides bile.
What is bile? A greenish liquid responsible for mechanical digestion of fats.
What is the lowest part of the small intestine? The ileum.
What is the name of microscopic 'fingers' that greatly increase the surface area of the wall of the small intestine? The villi.
What are the nutrients that pass from the small intestine? - Fatty acids and glycerol - Amino acids - Glucose
What is the large intestine? The final section of the digestion tract.
How long is the large intestine? 1.5m long
What is the diameter of the large intestine? 6 to 7cm.
What is the anus? A sphincter muscles at the end of the digestive tract.
What are the 4 types of digestive disorders? - Vomiting - Diarrhoea - Heartburn - Appendicitis
