Counting Numbers | {1, 2, 3, ...} |
Whole Numbers | {0, 1, 2, 3, ...} |
Integers | {..., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ...} |
Rational | p/q : p and q are integers, q is not zero examples: 1/2, -1/2, .5, -.5, 6, -7, 1.3333... and even 4.121212 (Repeating decimals like can be fractions. Example: 2/3=.666...) |
Irrational | not rational examples: pi, 4.5965...., square root of 2, These numbers go on and on and don't repeat. |
Real Numbers | All rational and irrational numbers. |
Imaginary Numbers | square root of a negative number can't be done...so you have to ________ it. Squaring the number makes it real. |
Absolute Value | Distance from zero. example: |-5| = 5 |
opposite number | Numbers that have the same absolute value, but a different sign. example: 5 and -5 |
Additive Inverse Example: The additive inverse of -5 is 5, because -5 + 5 = 0. The additive inverse of +5 is -5 as well. | What you add to a number to get zero. 5 + (-5) = 0 |
