Unit 5.1 - Energy around us. By: Roqaiah Ali
What does energy do? It makes things happen.
What are 5 forms of energy? - Kinetic energy - Heat energy - Light energy - Sound energy - Electrical energy
What is kinetic energy? Energy possessed by a moving object.
What is potential energy? Stored energy possessed by an object such as elastic potential energy of a squashed spring.
What best describes energy stored within a substance? Chemical energy.
What is photosynthesis? The process in which green plants convert light energy into chemical energy.
What are 4 different types of potential energy? - Gravitational potential energy - Chemical energy - Elastic potential energy - Nuclear energy
What is nuclear energy? Energy stored inside an atom.
Define gravitational potential energy? The stored energy of an object that is held above the earth's surface.
What is the term called when energy is passed from one object to another? Energy transfer.
What are 3 ways heat energy can be transferred in? - Conduction - Convection - Radiation
What is conduction? Heat transfer between 2 objects in contact.
What is radiation? Heat transfer as a wave, which can even travel through the vacuum of space.
Define convection. The transfer of heat in a liquid or gas.
What is it called when energy is changed or transformed? Energy transformation.
Define energy flow diagram. A diagram using arrows that shows the way energy is passed on or changed into other forms.
What does the law of conservation of energy state? Its states that energy can never be created nor destroyed. Instead, the energy is conserved, or kept, as it is converted from one form to another.
What does the law of conservation mean? It means: - Energy might be passed on or wasted but it is never lost - If one object wastes energy, than it is always gained by another object, usually heat.
What are the similarities between heat transfer by conduction and heat transfer by convection? - Conduction and convection are methods of heat transfer - Particles are needed for conduction and convection to occur.
What are the differences between heat transfer by conduction and heat transfer by convection? Convection is a type of heat transfer that occurs in liquids and gases whereas conduction occurs only in solids.
