Giardiasis (Giardia) Cause: Protozoa Mode of entry: Contact with infected faeces Symptoms: Diarrhoea and weight loss Prevention: correct disposal of faeces/good hygiene
Toxoplasma Cause: Protozoa Mode of entry: infected cat faeces Symptoms: vomiting/fever Prevention: wear gloves while gardening/good hygiene
Leptospirosis Cause: Bacteria Symptoms: high fever/vomiting mode of entry: infected urine or soil/breaks in skin Prevention: avoid contact with contaminated soil/cover cuts
Rabies Cause: Virus Mode of entry: a bite from an infected animal/scratch or lick to broken skin Symptoms: irrational fear of water/sensitivity to light Prevention: vaccine/don't approach wild animals
Ringworms Cause: Fungi Mode of entry: skin to skin contact/from soil Symptoms: red circular rash/circular patches of hair loss Prevention: good hygiene/avoid infected animals
Cheylettiella Cause: Mites - Ectoparasite Mode of entry: 2 animals in close contact/shared bedding Symptoms: red, itchy skin/hair loss Prevention: good hygiene/keep environment clean i.e. change bedding regularly
