Stage 1 (Days 1-4) Menstruation starts - The Uterus lining breaks down for about 4 days.
Stage 2 (Days 4-14) The uterus lining builds up again - into a thick spongy layer full of blood vessels, ready to receive a fertilised egg.
Stage 3 (Day 14) An egg develops an is released from the ovary - this is called ovulation.
Stage 4 (Approx day 14-28) The wall is then maintained - If no fertilised egg has landed on the uterus wall by day 28, the spongy lining starts to break down and the cycle starts again.
Hormone 1. FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone) (3) 1. Produced in the pituitary gland. 2. Causes an egg to develop in one of the ovaries. 3. Stimulates the ovaries to produce oestrogen.
Hormone 2. Oestrogen (3) 1. Produced in the ovaries. 2. Causes the lining of the uterus to repair. 3. Stimulates the production of LH and inhibits the production of FSH.
Hormone 3. LH (Luteinising Hormone) (3) 1. Produced by the Pituitary gland. 2. Stimulates the release of an egg at day 14 (ovulation). 3. Indirectly stimulates progesterone production.
Hormone 4. Progesterone (3) 1. Produced in the ovaries. 2. Maintains the lining of the uterus. When the level of progesterone falls, the lining breaks down. 3. Inhibits the production of LH.
