What does the Cell Membrane do? | The cell membrane protects the things inside the membrane by letting certain things in and keeping other things out. (It's called a selective barrier because it selects things to allow into the cell.) |
What does the mitochondria do? | The Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cells. They act like the digestive system by taking in nutrients and creating energy for the cell. |
What does the cell wall do? | These organelles are only found in plant cells. The cell wall protects the cell, and is also used as a structure for the plant/cell. |
What does the chloroplast do? | This organelle is also only found in plant cells. This organelle converts light energy from the sun into sugars that the cell will use. (Photosynthesis - creating their own food) |
What do the vacuoles do? | This organelle is found in both plant and animal cells, but it is much bigger in plant cells than animal cells. Vacuoles store food and energy so that the cells can use them later on. They can even store waste products to prevent the rest of the cell being contaminated. |
What does the nucleus do? | The nucleus is found in both plant and animal cells. It is the control center of the cell - it controls reproduction, eating and movement. |
What does the cytoplasm do? | The cytoplasm is found in both plant and animal cells. Cytoplasm is the fluid that fills the cell. The organelles stay inside of the cytoplasm. |
Name two examples of specialized cells. | - Sperm Cell - Root hair cell - The nerve cell - Red blood cell |
