What is the DOCTRINE of DOUBLE EFFECT? >based in the idea that intention of an act determines the moral rightness. >If a pregnant woman need life saving treatment but that treatment ended in the loss of the foetus then this would not be an abortion >why? the intention was to save a life not end a life. The foetus is dependent on the mother for survival so would die regardless.
What doe Liberal Christians teach about abortion >Take a relative moral approach. >Its not a good thing but it may be the 'lesser of 2 evils' >We live in a broken world and have to make the best choice in different situations. >Morality is relative to the individual situation e.g. rape/disability.
What does Peter Singer say about Abortion? >Peter Singer is a humanist. >Makes a distniction between having personhood and belonging to the human species >A foetus belongs to the human species but lacks personhood >Personhood requires conscious awareness. >Therefore abortion is not morally wrong and should be determined by the needs of the woman who has personhood
